Stout’s Sunday Report Video Edition! April 25, 2010

April 29, 2010 by

With the help of Matt Showell and Mike Yubane I’ve added a video segment to this week’s Sunday Report. I’ll let that do most of the commentary on this one, but a couple quick notes first.

I got lucksacked TWICE heads up in the Super Turbo to lose. Got it in as a 3 to 1 favorite heads up in the freeroll, but was mostly interested in advancing to the WSOP Main Event freeroll for making top two anyway.

A win in the Super Turbo would have been nice of course, but locking up a winning day in a $59 tournament with my amount of buy ins was a great thing all on its own.

I made a deepish run in my favorite online tournament, the Sunday 500, but ran into an assclown’s T 4 and could not defeat that hand. I added that to the video for sheer comic effect.

I also made a deep run in another one of my favorite tournaments, the Lock $268, $250k guaranteed.

Unfortunately I ended up punting that tournament, which is a damn shame because the fields are so soft on the site and they probably would have just handed me some chips down the stretch.

Here’s the breakdown:

Total tournaments played: 30

Total amount of buy-ins: $8,458

Total cashes: 6

-31/438 in Lock $109, $197.10

-106/1027 in Stars Sunday 500, $1,027

-2/1807 in Tilt $59 Super Turbo 6-max bounty, 2/1807 $10,448.98 + 10-$10 bounties & $55 “pro” bounty

-2/108 in Battle of the Blogger Tournament 5 Invitational, $310 + seat to WSOP freeroll

-43/815 in Lock $268/$250k gtd, $700

-36/872 in Stars Nightly $162, $562.44

Total amount of cashes/bounties: $13,400.52

Length of session: 13:16

Net win/loss for the day: +$4,942.52

Net win/loss online on Sundays since the start of the Sunday Report (February 7, 2010): +$7,658.49

Stout’s WPT $25k Championship Day 2 and 3 Recap

April 22, 2010 by

I was just glad that I’m getting a little more patient in my old age and was able to keep playing solid no matter how boring it got. Besides, I figured if I could just make it through to 4/20, I should run great all day.

And that’s EXACTLY how that shit went down! It actually started the night before, when I saw that I had drawn the softest table in the room, and the only soft table in the whole tournament, maybe even in $25k tournament history!

Punch it Chewy.

I managed to chip up from 171k to ~330k within the first level … without even going to showdown once. I was in a dreamland, but unfortunately we found out we were second in the table break order. =(

We broke shortly before the first break, much to my chagrin. I was moved to a much tougher table, including David Benyamine, Amit Makhija, Chris Moore, Andrew “luckychewy/RunThisTable” Lichtenberger, and Christian Harder.

Little did I know I was going to run so good at that table it didn’t matter how tough it was. Most importantly, after a ton of failed set mining, I flopped my first set of the tournament.

In a seven-way limped pot, I flopped top set against middle set on a 7 5 3. Peter Gould’s son and I turned that limped pot of ~25k into a 700k+ pot by the 9 turn, and I faded a single out for a near double up.

Then my rungoodsauce continued when I flopped quad Queens against Amit’s A-K on a K Q Q. I won a pretty big pot, but there’s a chance I could have gotten more if I’d played it faster. Either way, I was near a million and third in chips out of ~55 left.

I cruised through the rest of the day and finished 4th in chips with 919,500. We’ll be playing 4/8k with 35 players remaining to start day 4. The average stack is ~560k, 18 places pay, and first is just over $1.5 MIRRRRRRRRION. Check out the full chip counts right here and my table draw for tomorrow below.

1. Yevgeniy Timoshenko – 350,000
2. Matt Stout – 919,500
3. Cliff Josephy – 489,500
4. J.J. Liu – 495,000
5. Nikolay Evdakov – 668,500
6. Robert Rugiero – 453,000
7. Phil Hellmuth – 807,000
8. Billy Baxter – 887,500
9. Scotty Nguyen – 569,500

Happy 4/20 all!

WPT $25k Championship Day 1 Recap

Wow. Such shenanigans. That’s all I have to say … about that. (I hope people catch this movie reference)

And Nikolay Evdakov is one of the slowest acting players I’ve ever seen. Fortunately he’s such a nitbox that it doesn’t become an issue too often, but I wasn’t the only player at the table who was a little annoyed by him.

Not only did he really take his time to make his decisions, but after deliberating he would sometimes actually start jotting down notes in a small pad he had with him … ALL WHILE IT WAS HIS TURN TO ACT!

What a crazy table…I was pretty happy with my table draw from the start, actually. I expected a much tougher field for this event to be honest, and am glad many sickos decided to go play San Remo and Monte Carlo.

Anyway, rambling and tired so quick summary of a few key hands for the day:

- Turned a full house against John Duthie and got paid

- Made a flush with J-10 of spades against Jeremiah “Believer82″ Vinsant’s J-J, and busted him when he tank called all in on the river

- Rivered my good friend Paul Wasicka in a decent sized pot at the very end of the day when I already had a ton of chips and he was short, which was one of the VERY rare times that I’ve actually felt bad at the poker table…but then again he bluffed me out of a huge pot in a $10/25 NL private game in LA during the LA Poker Classic, so I guess I don’t feel too bad…=)

Up to 163k going to 400/800 tomorrow. 138 of 161 entrants remaining, but as I mentioned registration is still open.

Well, at least I got a good sweat out of the $750k guaranteed … even if it came with a little heartache.

I had a pretty big stack for most of the tournament and did my best to put a lot of focus on this over my other tables. I feel I played really well for most of the tournament and was happy to that end.

I actually almost made the sickest comeback of my career to final table this thing. I was crippled to ~35k @ 14/28k but played patiently and folded a few hands. Eventually I managed to run it back up to about 600k in two levels!

Unfortunately, I ended up running A-J into A-K at 17/34k when we were playing shorthanded near the final table bubble. Either way, it just reinforces a crucial concept in poker tournaments: DON’T EVER GIVE UP. In fact, I think I’m just going to turn that into its own future blog post since it’s so important.

The numbers speak for themselves, and they’re pretty gross. This is probably the first time I’ve ever cracked $10k in buy-ins on a “normal” Sunday, thanks in part to a couple new $640 satellites.

I made a run at one final table, but the best I could muster was a 15th place finish. Since my trip back from my 2nd place near Atlantic City was far more interesting than the Sunday session itself, I’ll talk about that here instead.

After spending a couple days visiting family in NY and NJ since I’ll be headed back to Vegas for several months today, I decided to play an online session in Brooklyn with a friend of mine who plays as “petegotaplan” online.

We’ve hung out a bunch but never had an opportunity to grind some donkaments together. Since my parents’ house and my old hometown of Bayonne, NJ are closer to Brooklyn, this seemed like a good opportunity.

Fast forward to a little after 2 am, 13 hours after our session began. Pete final table bubbles the Sunday Mulligan and it’s official: we have all committed an epic fail for the day.

Unfortunately, I decide that I want to take the 2+ hour drive back to Brigantine, NJ to sleep in my own bed instead of on the pull-out couch again. BIG mistake.

~2:45am – Leave Brooklyn.

~4:00am – Become too tired to drive about 70 miles from home, and stop at a rest area to nap in the car since falling asleep at the wheel is usually a bad thing.

~5:30am – Wake up from said nap, and decide that I’m going to take the Garden State Parkway North instead of South, which is the way I need to go. I’m a jackass.

~5:45am – Realize this, and turn around.

~6:00am – Well, I’ll let the link below tell the news since that’s what they do:

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/04/truck_fires_closes_garden_stat.html

~7:15am – Finally get to pass the charred oil tanker that had burst into flames <1/4 mi in front of me and head home.

~8:30am – End the longest Sunday ever, well into Monday morning.

Today was a pretty rough session, although it definitely could have been worse. I felt like I had been playing well all day but just wasn’t able to get anything going.

I was done registering and down to my last four tables with nothing to show for the day except one min-cash in the Stars $109 cubed. As usual I refused to give up and managed to get something going in a few tournaments at once.

I had a huge stack in the nightly $20k guaranteed on Lock Poker, but ended up fizzling out and busting on the final table bubble with 7-7 against 8-8.

I went deep in one of my favorite ridiculously tough tournaments again, the $200+rebuys. I managed to nearly final table bubble that one too!

I became shortstacked and shoved 7-7 over the top of someone’s open shorthanded at the final two tables. The board ran out completely clean through the turn and he rivered a Queen.

My last hope for the day was the Sunday 500 … which is probably my favorite online tournament ever. Of course, the fact that I had my biggest online win in the same event makes probably me a little biased.

We were playing shorthanded with three tables left when I moved in with A-K against Steve “PiKappRaider” Burkholder’s 10-10. I flopped an Ace, but he turned a ten to leave me drawing dead and end my Sunday session.

Oh well, there’s always next week!
